V is for Verdolagas

 

Again, I am relying on a name that may not show up on the sign at the grocer, but Verdolagas is known by many names.  Mexican parsley, Common Purslane, and Pigweed are different names depending on where the plant is grown. As I have just 1 hour and 45 minutes to get this post on the web, so I am taking the day 22 way out....a bit of history then ID, but ultimately, I am letting   teach you more about this edible weed that was one of Ghandi's favorites.

History:   In the United States, Verdolagas is classified as a weed.  It has been found in archeological digs in East Mediterranean countries from prehistoric sites.  The seeds have been found dating back to the seventh century BC.  

Identification:  You can find this edible weed growing in a crack of your sidewalk.  I am not sure you would want to eat that plant as dogs are common visitors, but if it is growing in the wild and you are willing to wash it thoroughly, it will not be coated in herbicides and pesticides.   Here is what you can look for...It is a succulent meaning fleshy leaves and stems.  It is usually green but sometimes has a reddish stem.  The leaves are flat and oval shaped.  Please watch the following video for a wonderful presentation for Verdolagas.
