Finally-Food as Medicine

Tess Kearns - Tuesday, February 02, 2016

There is an air of excitement when some form of food awareness makes it into the mainstream media.  I recently reported on GMOs and seeing them discussed on a Sunday morning news show.  This time, a news segment on NBC left me nearly giddy.  I have seen it happen, when a friend or loved one is treated medically, in a way that makes me cringe.  My father had many health problems and was good about going to the doctor (against the stereotype that men don't see the doctor).  His doctor regularly treated his symptoms.  When he was finally diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a little research revealed that most of his symptoms would have alerted the doctor to check for a greater cause.  Kidney stones - too much calcium.  Instead of making them easier to pass, why didn't the doctor ask, "Hmm, why is your body producing so much calcium that you are having trouble metabolizing it?"  This would have revealed the parathyroid was under attack from another cancerous tumor.  There was a pain in my father's lower back.  He was told to get a new mattress.  So many steps along the way, failure after failure to correctly diagnose a symptom producing problem.  My mother has been told to loose weight.  Without guidance or a plan, sending someone home with those instructions is like asking them to run a marathon.  With the education of doctors expanding to the kitchen, there may be a new philosophy seeping into medical treatment.  We can only  hope...
